Instead of merely slicing your leftover holiday ham and slapping it between a piece of bread, try this Maple Glazed Ham and Brie Sandwich recipe.
This tasty sandwich does take about 20 minutes to prepare because of the time needed to fry the ham. Be sure to leave yourself plenty of time if friends or family are expected for lunch.
Things You’ll Need:
Spiral Cut Ham
Maple Syrup
Brie
Fresh Rolls
Heirloom Tomato
Dijon Mustard
Frying Pan
Plate
Paper Towels
Tongs
Making the Maple Glazed Ham and Brie Sandwich:
Pour a healthy amount of maple syrup into your frying pan. Make sure it is enough that a piece of spiral cut ham can be completely submerged in it.
Place the frying pan on a stove top burner and turn the heat up to high.
Allow the maple syrup to heat until it bubbles. Turn the heat on the burned down slightly. (Otherwise the sugar in the maple syrup will burn. It should be just below a boil)
Using your tongs, place a few slices of ham into the maple syrup.
Let the spiral cut ham fry in the maple syrup until develops a sugary glaze.
Flip the spiral cut ham pieces to the other side. (Even with a healthy amount of maple syrup the ham tends to float, meaning that the other side needs to be submerged as well)
Using your tongs, remove the spiral cut ham pieces from the frying pan and place them on a plate off to the side.
If needed add a little more maple syrup to the pan. (During this cooking process, the maple syrup both evaporates and glazes to the ham pieces. After a couple of batches, more maple syrup will definitely be needed. However, because the remaining syrup and pan are so hot, you won’t have to again bring it to a boil.)
Add additional slices of spiral cut ham into the frying pan and repeat until you have enough to serve sandwiches for everyone dining.
While each batch of ham is cooking, take a paper towel (or two) and gently blot the newly maple glazed spiral cut ham. This will remove excess maple syrup from the ham. If you skip this step the rolls can get soggy with maple syrup.
Cut your brie into thin slices. (The brie should be removed from the fridge while the maple syrup is initially coming to a boil. This will allow it to reach room temperature. Otherwise you’ll have both cold and hot items on your sandwich.)
Remove the rind of the brie and discard.
Slice the heirloom tomatoes into think slices.
Slice your rolls in half.
Spread a small amount of Dijon mustard on the top part of the roll.
Layer several slices of maple glazed ham onto the sliced roll. Add the brie and tomato and finish by placing the top half of the roll on the sandwich.
Serve with potato chips and a pickle.
Experiment with Different Mustards:
From sweet to spicy and everything in between allow your guests to sample several different mustards before placing them on their sandwich. Another popular favorite with this sandwich is cranberry mustard.
Change Up the Cheese:
Not everyone loves the creamy texture of brie cheese. Other popular substitutions on this sandwich are sharp cheddar or a mild bleu.
