But with money becoming increasingly tight and issues around the environmental disadvantages of plastic food packaging people are increasingly rediscovering the benefits of making their own sandwiches .
Producing home-made sandwiches can be fun and it is easier to cater for allergies, likes, dislikes and strange filling combinations.
Four easy to make sandwich filling recipes, guaranteed to brighten up any lunch-box or evening snack tray are detailed below.
Each recipe should make enough filling for two rounds of sandwiches or to fill two half baguettes.
Cheese, Spring Onion, Tuna and Black Pepper Sandwich Filling
Ingredients
50g Hard Cheese (cheddar is ideal), grated
2 Spring Onions, roughly chopped
1 Medium tin of Tuna
Freshly ground Black Pepper to season
1 Tablespoon of Mayonnaise, if required
Method
Place the tuna, spring onions and cheese into a mixing bowl.
Mix well with a fork - if mayonnaise is required, add it at this point and mix until all the ingredients are well combined.
Add freshly ground black pepper to taste.
Once the ingredients are well combined, divide the mixture between 2 slices of bread or baguettes.
Cottage Cheese, Celery and Spring Onion Sandwich Filling
Ingredients
1 Standard sized tub of Cottage Cheese
2 Sticks of Celery, washed and roughly chopped
2 Spring Onions, roughly chopped
Freshly ground Salt and Black Pepper
Method
Spoon the cottage cheese into a mixing bowl.
Add the celery and spring onions and mix well.
Add the freshly ground salt and black pepper to taste.
When the ingredients are well combined, divide the mixture between 2 slices of bread or baguettes.
Egg, Tomato and Black Pepper Sandwich Filling
Ingredients
2 Eggs, hard boiled
2 Ripe Tomatoes
Freshly Ground Salt and Pepper, to taste
Drizzle of Virgin Olive Oil
Fresh Basil Leaves
Method
Shell the hard boiled eggs.
Slice the eggs and arrange onto the bread or inside the baguettes.
Slice the tomatoes and place them on top of the egg.
Tear the basil leaves over the top of the egg and tomato and drizzle with olive oil.
Add the freshly ground salt and pepper.
Roast Beef, Mustard and Beetroot Sandwich Filling
Ingredients
4 Slices of Roast Beef
1 Teaspoon of Mustard
4 Slices of cooked beetroot
Method
Arrange the roast beef slices on to the bread or inside the baguettes.
Smear mustard on top of the roast beef.
Arrange the beetroot slices on top of the beef.
For variety try using seedy bread or baguettes, cornbread or wholemeal pitta bread. All of these will add colour, texture and nutrients to these tasty fillings. Each recipe can of course be personalised as much as required, that's the fun of making your own.
