If you're tired of eating the same old grilled cheese sandwich, then add these ingredients to spice up your sandwich. Your friends and family will be seriously impressed.

California is known for producing such wonderful cheeses, such as Monterey Jack, growing stunning avocados and adhering to a heavy Spanish and Mexican influence in its cuisine. This recipe combines several of the wonderful flavors into one crunchy and tasty sandwich. Here's how to make a California Grilled Cheese Sandwich.

The California Grilled Cheese

You will need:

  • 2 Slices of Bread per Sandwich
  • Butter
  • Monterey Jack Cheese
  • Peach Salsa
  • 1 Ripe Avocado
  • Alfalfa Sprouts
  • Frying Pan
  • Non-Stick Spray

The Assembly of the California Grilled Cheese Sandwich

  1. Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. Then turn each slide of bread over so that the buttered side is facing down.
  2. Spoon a small amount of salsa on the side of the bread that is now facing up. Make sure to only place a thin layer as you don't want the salsa to make the sandwich soggy in any way.
  3. Add a healthy layer of Monterey Jack cheese over the salsa.
  4. Place a few slices of avocado on top of the cheese.
  5. Follow with another layer of Monterey Jack cheese.
  6. Place a small amount of Alfalfa sprouts on the second layer of cheese.
  7. Finish the assembly by adding the other piece of bread so that the buttered side is facing up.

Cooking your California Grilled Cheese on the Stovetop

  1. Spray the bottom of your frying pan with a healthy amount of non-stick spray. Turn the range on to medium heat and allow the pan to heat for a couple of minutes.
  2. Place your California Grilled Cheese sandwiches inside the frying pan. Cover the frying pan with a lid. Allow the sandwiches to cook for about 3 minutes until you notice the cheese beginning to melt.
  3. Flip the sandwiches on to their other side, cover and cook for about another minute until the cheese is melted and the bread is crispy and crunchy.
  4. Your California Grilled Cheese Sandwiches are ready to serve.

Cooking your California Grilled Cheese on a Gas Grill

Brush the grill rack with a healthy amount of olive oil. Turn the grill on until it reaches a medium heat.

Place the sandwiches on the grill and follow the above instructions for a true "grill flavor."

Tricks of the Trade

If you want to make your California Grilled Cheese Sandwich into more of a panini-style, then take a heavy object, such as a tea kettle and place it on top of the sandwich. The weight will cause the sandwich to flatten and the bread to develop a crunchier crust.

Substitutions

If your kids don't like alfalfa sprouts, then substitute slices of tomato instead.

If you're not a salsa fan, spread a bit of olive tapenade on the bottom of the bread.
